THE SIX-LINE RITUAL

The I Ching three-coin method

The three-coin method turns six throws into a hexagram. Each throw creates one line, beginning at the bottom and rising toward the top.

How one line is formed

Each coin is assigned one of two values. The three values are added to produce 6, 7, 8, or 9. A 7 is young yang, shown as an unbroken line. An 8 is young yin, shown as a broken line.

A 6 is old yin and a 9 is old yang. These are changing lines: they belong to the primary hexagram but transform into their opposite when the relating hexagram is formed.

Why the lines rise upward

The first throw forms the bottom line because the hexagram is traditionally built from earth toward heaven. Five more throws are placed above it until all six lines are complete.

The order matters. Reversing the sequence produces a different hexagram and therefore a different pattern.

The ritual in this experience

The Eastern Oracle follows the six-throw structure. You can shake your phone or release the coins on screen. Each completed throw is fixed before the next line begins, and the resulting six-line figure is matched to one of the 64 hexagrams.

The animation creates a moment of attention, but the essential practice is simple: keep the same question in mind through all six casts.
