FORM THE QUESTION

How to ask the I Ching

A good question creates room for insight. It is specific enough to hold a real situation, but open enough to reveal something you may not have considered.

Ask for understanding, not permission

Questions such as “What do I need to understand about this relationship?” or “How should I approach this change?” usually produce more useful reflection than asking only for yes or no.

The oracle is strongest when the question includes your own position. Instead of asking what another person secretly thinks, ask what you need to recognize about the relationship between you.

Give one situation your full attention

Avoid combining several unrelated decisions into one consultation. If love, work, and relocation are all present, choose the issue that carries the greatest weight now.

Include enough context to make the tension clear, but do not argue for the answer you hope to receive. Honest uncertainty is a better starting point than a carefully defended conclusion.

Examples of useful questions

What pattern am I repeating in this situation? What should guide my next conversation? What is the right way to approach this opportunity? What am I failing to see about the obstacle in front of me?

After the reading, return to the original question. Notice whether the hexagram changed the question itself. Sometimes that shift is the most accurate part of the answer.
